Noritake redefined with Design Collection at Alcova Milano

A transformative new direction for Noritake was celebrated during Milan Design Week with the unveiling of the Noritake Design Collection at ALCOVA in Villa Borsani in 2025. Yuichiro Hori, Noritake’s Creative Director, steered this bold new chapter to empower top global designers with the creative freedom to fuse their artistry with Noritake’s 120 year history of handcraft skills and materials. The result was imaginative tableware collections steeped in storytelling, by Yabu Pushelberg, Marc Newson, Ed Ng, co-founder of AB Concept, plus new sets inspired from Frank Lloyd Wright’s original Imperial Hotel design archives. Heralding Noritake’s traditional techniques while embracing forward thinking design, Faye Toogood’s limited edition pieces entitled Rose, were inspired by Noritake’s archives. She also art directed the exhibition space with the diverse new collections. Yamagiwa also joined in bringing their century old heritage of Japanese craftsmanship and their nod to Frank Lloyd Wright to share ‘the art of lighting’ through a contemporary lens.

The Noritake Design Collection is moving Noritake toward a future where heritage and modern creativity seamlessly converge. In addition to Faye Toogood, top luxury and innovation minded designers from around the world were selected after meticulous collaboration with Noritake. Common to all collections is the approach of creating tableware that endures on the table as a sculptural display piece in daily life and long after the meal. Yabu Pushelberg’s Hoshikage collection, named after the Japanese word for starlight, uses a traditional glazing technique with a glistening effect called ‘Yohen’. George Yabu and Glenn Pushelberg set out to challenge how age-old traditional techniques can create completely new effects through the power of design.

Ed Ng, co-founder of AB Concept, introduced the Bangle collection that is highly crafted, sculptural, and stacking with inspiration from contemporary fashion and the textures of nature. Marc Newson revived timeless designs for everyday use. Lastly, Noritake and the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation studio became inspired during review of original Frank Lloyd Wright and Noritake tableware archives from Wright’s 1920’s Imperial Hotel design. They decided then to

reimagine a completely new collection, named the Peacock Collection, deconstructing Wright’s unique patterns from his iconic hand carved Oya stone Peacock artwork, from the same original Imperial hotel. Creative Director Yuichiro Hori elevated Noritake’s global and creative strategy. He emphasizes, ‘To honour Noritake’s century old traditions and global roots, we needed a respectful, yet bold strategy that includes crafting signature collections, with exceptional global designers who can beautifully intertwine Noritake’s legacy with their modern artistry’.
